From the 6th to the 10th of October our circus director Ulla was in San Francisco attending the biennial American Circus Educators Conference. The conference brought circus educators from the US and further afield together for five full days of workshops led by top international practitioners in areas such as circus pedagogy and management, circus techniques, artistic approaches and safety. It was hosted by Circus Center in collaboration with AcroSports. In total 200 attendees representing 100 different organizations took part in over 130 workshops and witnessed 3 inspirational keynotes over the 5 days.
Whilst attending, Ulla gave a seminar on ‘Circus+ - European Research on Youth and Social Circus Pedagogy’, a CARAVAN research project which Galway Community Circus was involved with for two years, from 2014 - 2016. This was a wonderful opportunity for the work going on in Europe to be shared with the wider community.
As the Irish circus sector is growing, the insight gained by Ulla at this conference will benefit current and future artistic initiatives involving children and young people in Ireland. This growing sector has many exciting opportunities ahead and it is instrumental that we learn from international examples to ensure that the sector continues to grow with high artistic quality, creativity, safety, innovation and accessibility at its core. Big thank you to the Arts Council of Ireland for supporting this opportunity.
